The Newton Christian Youth Softball League (NCYSL) began in 1990 as a summer activity for the children of a local Christian school and it’s sponsoring Baptist church. It was a co-ed league for grades 1-6 with about 40 children on 3 teams playing on a makeshift field.
With the departure of the program coordinator in 1992, Covington Christian Church offered to move the program to the church’s softball field. At that time the program became known as Newton Christian Youth Softball League, choose a board of directors, and became a ministry of Covington Christian Church. The program grew that year to 95 children from age
5 to the 8th grade and divided into to two age-based divisions.
The league continued to grow each year. A third division was added as the age was increased to include 15 years of age in 1993. In 1997 a fourth division was added for young people from the age of 16 to 18. All the while the cost of participation remained low. The original cost was $10, increased to $15 when each player was given a game jersey beginning in 1994, and then increased to the present cost of $25 when it was determined that an upgrade in facilities was needed in 1997.
As the 1997 season saw just under 250 young people, the 1998 season began with a new field having been constructed for the youngest division. The league has continued to grow and prosper with the support of Covington Christian Church and the many parents, relatives, and friends of the players who have passed through the league. In 2002 the league had 352 participants on 25 teams in 3 divisions (the fourth division was no longer operated after 2000) representing 79 different churches and at least 4 counties.
